National Dairy Database Version 3.0

Dairy Energy Database

Introduction

As existing dairies expand or update their operations, new dairies are built, and new electric technologies are developed for agriculture, there is an increasing need for up-to-date information on the efficient use of electricity on the farm. The Dairy Energy Database is designed to help utilities and agricultural professionals acquire that information and make educated decisions regarding energy management for dairy farms. The information in the Dairy Energy Database will help dairy planners evaluate energy-saving technologies that can enhance product quality, reduce operating costs, and increase operator and cow comfort.

Opportunities for cost-effective, energy-saving technologies abound on dairy farms, from adopting new standards for vacuum pump sizing to installing energy efficient barn lighting. This beta version of the Dairy Energy Database contains only a very small portion of the available information on energy efficient technology for dairies. It contains information on recent changes in milking system design and performance standards and the impact of these changes on milking system energy use.
