Downloadable digital datasets

Digital datasets derived from published maps (original presentation scale: 1:100,000) are now available. Each dataset includes vector information showing geologic units and contacts in ArcInfo™ interchange format (.e00) with Federal Geographic Data Committee compliant metadata as well as an Adobe® Acrobat® PDF file of the map and any accompanying report.

These files have been compressed into one zipped file; once you have downloaded the zipped file, you will need special software to unzip the files. Many computers come with such software; if yours does not, you can find many freeware varieties on the Internet. For example, visit the Web site <http://www.zip995.com> or use a search engine to find other unzip freeware.

After you unzip the files in the desired location on your computer, you will see three files: disclaimer.exe, data.gs, and readme.txt. To further extract the data, you need to click on the file “disclaimer.exe” and accept the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey Digital Data Sharing Terms of Use in the dialog box. Upon your acceptance, the files will be extracted to your hard drive. Please view the “readme.txt” file for more information.

For your convenience, the Survey also sells these data on CD-ROM for $25/per CD, plus tax and shipping charges. Some of these files are very large (their compressed sizes are listed below); if you do not have a high-speed Internet connection, you may wish to purchase a CD instead of downloading the datasets.

Select a link below to begin the download process. Please note that it may take a few moments for a dialog box to appear, especially for the larger files.

Save (do not choose the “open file” option) the zipped file to your computer, and then unzip it with your chosen software; you will then have three files: disclaimer.exe, data.gs, and readme.txt. Click on the file “disclaimer.exe” to finish the unzipping process. Refer to the “readme.txt” file for more information.

If you have problems with your downloaded dataset, please contact bcbristoll@wisc.edu.
