Each figure should be submitted as a separate file. Please do not embed figures in word-processing document.
All figures needing scales should include them.
Eliminate information that you do not want to see in the final version before submitting the graphic.
Color figures are acceptable.
Figures may be supplied in vector or raster format.
- Vector files are scalable and generally allow more changes.
- Vector files can be developed in such programs as Arc, Surfer, Grapher, Illustrator, Corel Draw, and Excel. Preferred formats are eps and ps; ai, wmf,
and emf files may be acceptable, but be aware that wmf/emf files can lose data if the figures are complicated. Exception: Excel graphs may be
supplied in their native format.
- Fonts can be an issue in vector files. If specific symbols or fonts are needed, it is best to ‘convert to curves’ in the eps or, alternatively, to make
sure the graphics person has that specific font loaded on their computer.
- For raster graphics, such as photographs and scans, tiff format is preferred; jpegs may be acceptable. The following resolutions are recommended: 300 dpi/ppi continuous tone [grey scale] and color with no text or arrows; 600 dpi/ppi continuous tone with text or arrows; 1,200 dpi/ppi for line art, scanned topographic maps.
Photographs should be clear, sharply focused, and of good contrast. Photographs taken with a digital camera are discouraged unless resolution is 200 to 300 dots per inch at publication size.
