Map and report feature La Crosse County geology

The Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey has released a report and accompanying map that describe the geologic history of La Crosse County, which lies in the northwestern part of the Driftless Area.

cover of Bulletin 101 showing roadcut in La Crosse County, Wisconsin La Crosse County is characterized by contrasts in topography, geology, and land use. Broad, flat river terraces along the western margin of the county are strikingly different from the steep, hilly landscape of the county to the east. Areas of sediment deposited within the past 25,000 years, during and after the most recent glacial period, are alongside near-vertical bluffs of sandstone and dolomite rock that is hundreds of million years old. Dramatic differences are also evident between the county's rapidly urbanizing corridor along the Mississippi River and the sparsely populated agricultural uplands that are characterized by farms and small communities.

A full-color map helps the reader visualize the contrasts of the county.

The report with map, Geology of La Crosse County, Wisconsin, by Survey geologist Thomas J. Evans is available as Survey Bulletin 101 for $15. A CD-ROM of the digital data used to create the map is available separately for $25; if you prefer, these data may be downloaded.
