Horses 1
What you can do in this project: learn horse behavior and terms; study breeds and identify body parts; saddle, groom and bridle your horse; practice horse safety and horse selection.

Horses 2

Program Safety Regulations
All 4-H members and leaders (adult or youth) participating in the horses project or activities must use protective or safety equipment, including approved safety helmets. Refer to the Program Safety section for specific requirements for the horse project

Horse Project Training
Many counties hold local training for members and leaders in their favorite project areas, including horses. Watch your county 4-H Family newsletter or contact your county Extension office for details.

Horse Judging Clinic for Youth

Youth Horse Judging Clinic at UW-River Falls -March 7 and 8, 2009 Deadline Feb 20, 2009

Wisconsin 4-H Area Animal Science Days
Series of four day-long events held around the state each summer where youth in the beef, dairy, horse, sheep and swine projects increase their decision making skills and knowledge of animals through judging and grading experiences. Events include evaluation of dairy cattle, horses and meat animals; dairy showmanship contests; hippology (the study of horses); and oral reasons workshops. In addition, each site offers a variety of workshops for small animal projects, which may include rabbits, poultry, dogs, cats or llamas.

Horse Handbook Information on the Wisconsin 4-H Horse Association and opportunities in the Wisconsin 4-H horse and pony projects.
This handbook is updated annually at the January meeting of the Wisconsin 4-H Horse Association. . Updates will be posted sometime during the month of January.

County Fair Judges Clinic

There will not be a clinic for county fair judges in 2009. The next clinic will be held in February of 2010. Below is a listing of those individuals who attended the last judges clinic. These individuals are available and interested in judging fairs and shows. They have taken the time to update their skills and learn more about working with youth. You may want to consider them for your youth shows.

Midwest Horse Fair - Used Tack Sale Form
Event held in Madison, WI, each April with over 500 vendors, speakers, educational seminars, and 1,200 horses.

Wisconsin 4-H Horse Bowl
Provides an opportunity for youth enrolled in 4-H horse projects to demonstrate their knowledge of equine-related subject matter in a competitive setting where attitudes of friendliness and fairness prevail. Held each May. Check with your county Extension office for details.

Wisconsin 4-H Horse Hunter and Dressage Clinic and Show

Horse speed and game show held annually the first weekend after Labor Day.

Wisconsin 4-H Horse Expo - See in Horse Handbook Section
Annual event held during the third weekend in September at the State Fairgrounds in West Allis, WI. Features several horse-related events.

Wisconsin 4-H Horse Leaders Conference
Statewide leadership conference for adults and teens held during the second weekend in November and sponsored by 4-H and UW Animal Sciences.

County Fair

The county fair . . . what a great time it is! Every summer, families flock to county fairs to see the latest 4-H project exhibits. Exhibiting is a fun and educational way for youth to showcase their project work to judges and to the public. Judging materials are supported by Bill Shaw in memory of his wife, Shirley.
