Come Work at Upham Woods!
We accept applications on an on-going basis for our Season Naturalist positions.
Do you have passion for the outdoors and teaching others about it? This is the job for you! Spend your days hiking and canoeing while teaching children in a beautiful setting right on the Wisconsin River. This position is a great way to broaden your skills by teaching natural and cultural programs, outdoor recreation and low ropes initiatives, as well as learning scheduling and coordinating.
Upham Woods Outdoor Learning Center is a residential facility operated by the University of Wisconsin-Extension and located on the magnificent Wisconsin River, two miles north of Wisconsin Dells. The site consists of 14 buildings that supply lodging, meals and environmental education resources year round for youth and youth leaders. The center rests on 310 acres of forested land including Black Hawk Island, a 210-acre designated State Natural Area. This wooded property is considered one of the few remaining “old growth” natural areas of the state. The rock cliffs, shady canyons, caves and sandy beaches feature a variety of flora, fauna and unique geologic and cultural history.
Responsibilities: Naturalists teach a variety of environmental education programs with an emphasis on the wildlife, natural history and ecology of the forests and rivers of Wisconsin, care and feeding of science center animals, facilitation of low ropes initiatives courses, and to assist in the general operation of the center.
Qualifications: Ability to work in a team setting with enthusiasm and creativity and the desire to teach environmental education to school groups and weekend recreational groups. Applicants must have obtained at least a sophomore standing in college. A Bachelor or Associate degree in Education, Natural Science, Biology, Environmental Education, or a related field preferred. Applicants should be lifeguard certified or be willing to obtain this certification before employment, as well as posses First Aid and CPR certification. A number of our programs are conducted on or near the Wisconsin River, so lifeguard certification is desired. Preference will be given to applicants with training and/or experience in environmental education, natural resources or youth development.
Compensation: Base salary starts at $260/week, plus room and board, but salary increases with additional certifications and educational degrees. Workers compensation is provided. The Upham Woods staff also have access to discounted outdoor clothing and gear through our professional courtesy connections.
Staff housing is provided in a duplex on the camp property. Staff have their own room and some have their own bathroom - or you would have to share the bathroom with one staff member. The duplex has five bedrooms, three living rooms, two full kitchens, and a washer and dryer for staff use. There is an attached garage where bikes may be stored.

This is a seasonal position. Upham Woods hires educators for different seasons each year including the fall (Sept.-Nov.), winter/spring (Jan-May) and summer (June-Aug.).
