Prior to and since the initiation of this bacteria monitoring project, we have discovered a number of volunteer monitoring programs that conduct bacteria monitoring. We use this page to list those programs that we've found support volunteers to do E. coli monitoring in streams. If you have a volunteer monitoring program to report, please send an email with appropriate information to one of the project contacts.

Alabama

Alabama Water Watch: Coliscan Easygel

California

Citizen Monitoring Coordinator for the SWRCB Clean Water Team told us, "In southern California there is an ongoing program that has been monitoring bacteria along the Los Angeles River ,the ports (Long Beach and Los Angeles) and other waterbodies along the coast (mostly freshwater). Other groups have been monitoring bacteria for a lesser time period sometimes under a year. These groups operate under approved QAPPs and have conducted many multi-lab quality assurance sessions. The data has found many uses and in some cases the citizen monitoring data is the only data avaliable and the citizen groups are ahead of the curve in regards to some agencies.

Unfortunately one or two groups that I know of have not been operating under a QAPP and have been posting data. The quality of those group's data unknown, but they do not post a disclaimer. After conducting a field audit and laboratory inspection with one of these groups I would not find their data acceptable. These groups can spoil the whole lot. Through communiction and working with potential data users on your QA/QC many barriers have quickly disolved and results in the data being used."
