Youth Learn Leadership Skills Through Ongoing Program
“It doesn’t always feel good to do the right thing.” Interesting insight on leadership by one local 7th grader at the end of a leadership workshop held at the Ashland Middle School recently. Doug Liphart of UW-Extension worked with nearly 39 youth identified for their leadership potential through Jean Mazzella’s Gifted and Talented program at AMS. The program was part of an ongoing effort to develop greater leadership skills and capacity within the school aged population. Not only will this build future community leaders, but it will help create a group of youth who have a positive presence in the school district. Liphart does “hands – on” leadership development with the students three times a year. He has worked with the students for nearly three years. The students themselves identified a list of ten skills or traits that good leaders have. At each workshop the youth work on one of the skills. These include communication skills, decision making (group and individual), and problem solving. |

MISSION
With an office in each Wisconsin county, Cooperative Extension
develops practical educational programs tailored to local needs
and based on university knowledge and research.
County-based Extension educators are University of Wisconsin
faculty and staff who are experts in agriculture and agribusiness,
community and economic development, natural resources, family
living and youth development.
Extension county-based faculty and staff live and work with
the people they serve in communities across the state. Extension
specialists work on UW System campuses where they access current
research and knowledge. Collaboration between county and campus
faculty is the hallmark of Cooperative Extension in Wisconsin. |
