A Profile of Participation in Distance Education: 1999-2000
This report from the National Center for Education Statistics, U.S. Department of Education, profiles undergraduate and graduate students' participation in distance education in 1999-2000. The report discusses student demographic characteristics associated with distance education participation as well as different types of distance education technology and students' satisfaction with their distance education courses compared to their regular courses. Results show that students with characteristics associated with greater family and work responsibilities tend to participate in distance education at higher rates than their counterparts with fewer family and work responsibilities. -

Higher Education Distance Education Resources
From the National Education Association, this site provides links to several NEA publications on distance education and faculty issues,including the 2000 Survey of Traditional and Distance Learning Higher Education Members, which asks and answers questions such as: "Distance Learning Faculty: Who Are They?" NEA is the largest college and university faculty and staff organization in the United States, representing more than 115,000 higher education personnel. -
American Center for the Study of Distance Education (ACSDE)
ACSDE provides consultation to national and local bodies, develops distance education courses, and incorporates distance education into existing systems. It has become recognized as a clearinghouse for information and research on developments in distance education. -
Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE)
WICHE was created to facilitate resource sharing among the higher education systems of the Western United States. It is a regional organization created by the Western Regional Education Compact, adopted in the 1950s by Western states. Publications relating to Educational Telecommunications are available to order. -
NASULGC: Information Technology and Distance Education - Legislative Issues and Initiative

Effectiveness of Distance Education

The Times Higher Education Supplement
The Times Higher Education Supplement is designed specifically for professional people working in higher education and research. The THES was founded in 1971 and has been online since 1995. Many of the articles and source documents are available only to paid subscribers. Distance education, online learning and other related topics are available through searching the archives. -
