Milwaukee Art Museum tour features Chihuly/Calatrava design

The Friends of WHA-TV/Wisconsin Public Television (WPT) and the Elvehjem Museum of Art, Madison, will sponsor a one-day, docent-led tour of the Milwaukee Art Museum (MAM) on Friday, Oct. 3.

Internationally famed artist Dale Chihuly, trained at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is known for his delicate, yet imposingly large, glass sculptures. The ¿Chihuly Over Venice¿ exhibition at MAM highlights 11 glass ¿chandeliers.¿ The chandeliers were created in different countries and reflect their origins, a red chandelier with sombreroshaped surfaces was made in Mexico and a clear glass example with etched waterfalls was created in Waterford, Ireland. The chandeliers had been hung in Venetian plazas and over canals in 1995.

The MAM building itself has become an object of admiration with its added, soaring pavilion, the first Santiago Calatrava-designed building in the United States. The tour departs at 8 a.m. on Friday, October 3, on a comfortable coach bus. The group will return to Madison at approximately 6 p.m. The cost is $65 for members of the Elvehjem Museum of Art or WPT. Non-members may attend for an additional ten-dollar cost. The registration deadline is September 5.

For further information, call the Elvehjem Museum of Art at (608) 263-2495 or WPT at (608) 262-5256, or visit WPT¿s Web site at http://www.wpt.org">wpt.org. Written inquiries can be addressed to DeAnne Massey, WPT, 821 University Ave., Madison, WI 53706.
